Hubris & Humiliation at Sydney Theatre Company. 2023.
HUBRIS & HUMILIATION
“Love is the cause and solution to all of our problems.”
Hubris & Humiliation is a laugh-out-loud queer reimagining of Austenian romance set amidst the leafy avenues, and glittery dancefloors of post-plebiscite Sydney.
When a down-on-her-luck mother loses her home to a shady online suitor, she sends her only son to the big city to find and marry a wealthy man. What follows is a kaleidoscopic satire of class, queerness, and modern love—equal parts Jane Austen and Mardi Gras extravaganza.
Winner of three Sydney Theatre Awards including Best New Australian Work, this high-camp comedy of manners is fizzy, flirty, and unexpectedly moving.
